Florence\u2019s Stadio Artemio Franchi (originally Stadio Giovanni Berta), designed and built by Pier Luigi Nervi<\/strong> and his associates between 1929 and 1932<\/strong>, is an iconic work of twentieth century concrete engineering and sports design.\u00a0 Its boldly cantilevered roof and evocative helical staircases won critical praise and popular attention throughout Italy, Europe, and the world, and called attention to Nervi\u2019s talent as an engineer, designer, and constructor.\u00a0 For nearly 90 years, the stadium has been home to Florence\u2019s premiere football team, Fiorentina, and while it underwent renovations for the 1990 World Cup that concealed much of its impressive structural design, the stadium\u2019s historic fabric remains largely intact.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After plans to abandon the Artemio Franchi for a new stadium in Florence\u2019s suburbs fell through, Fiorentina announced, earlier this year, plans to reconstruct a new facility on the site of Nervi\u2019s masterpiece.\u00a0 Enabled by legislation passed, hurriedly, in September that exempts stadiums and other sports facilities from Italy\u2019s thorough conservation legislation, the team\u2019s plans threaten to demolish or irreversibly alter much of the historic stadium\u2019s structure,<\/strong> potentially leaving only \u2018souvenirs\u2019 like it\u2019s Torre Maratonawhile replacing much of the original concrete stands. This was confirmed on the 16th of November, when the team wrote to the Ministry of Cultural Heritage asking to evaluate which parts it would be allowed to tear down.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In response, the Pier Luigi Nervi Project Association<\/strong> is mounting a campaign to raise awareness of the stadium\u2019s importance and the imminent threat to its integrity, launching a website in Italian and English (https:\/\/www.salviamoilfranchi.org\/<\/a>) that details the stadium\u2019s design and history and that calls on architects, engineers, and historians to contact Andrea Pessina<\/strong>, the Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for Florence to intervene on behalf of the Nervi stadium.\u00a0 A petition on change.org<\/a><\/strong> directed to the Mayor of Florence in support of Nervi\u2019s masterpiece has garnered over 2,600 signatures from around the world<\/strong> (http:\/\/chng.it\/ZRccYwNG<\/a>), and the PLNP Association is leading a campaign among leading architects and engineers worldwide<\/strong> to bring attention to the demolition threat.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The stadium is \u201camong the most important monuments of Italian architecture due to its unprecedented role as structural architecture<\/em>,\u201d according to Marco Nervi, President of the Pier Luigi Nervi Project Association and Ugo Carughi, President of DOCOMOMO Italia<\/strong>.\u00a0 It \u201cinaugurated a new way of seeing and conceiving forms, and of realizing them through technologies and construction methods that were cutting-edge for their time<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas Leslie<\/strong>, FAIA, a historian of construction and author of Beauty\u2019s Rigor: Patterns of Production in the Work of Pier Luigi Nervi<\/em>, calls the Franchi an \u201cessential work of 20th century engineering and architecture.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThis was the project that first hinted at a great, undiscovered talent working in Italy,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cNervi\u2019s stadium set a high standard for sports design and for structural engineering, matching improvements in efficiency with daring structural forms and poetic, evocative architectural elements<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To prevent the stadium\u2019s irremediable destruction the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on 20th Century Heritage has issued an International\u00a0 Heritage Alert.<\/strong> \u201cIt is extremely hard to believe what is happening, given the overwhelming and obvious significance of this heritage place<\/em>,\u201d comments Gunny Harboe, FAIA, President of the International Scientific Committee<\/strong>, \u201cNervi was unquestionably one of the great master architect\/engineers of the 20th\u00a0century, with influence all over the world.<\/em>\u201d The Alert asks that the stadium\u2019s imminent demolition be halted<\/strong>, that a thorough, neutral investigation of its structural and architectural condition be carried out, and that the historic fabric\u2019s preservation be made a priority in the team\u2019s future plans.<\/p>\n

Lo Stadio Artemio Franch<\/strong>i di Firenze (originariamente Stadio Giovanni Berta), progettato e costruito da Pier Luigi Nervi<\/strong> e dai suoi collaboratori tra il 1929 e il 1932<\/strong>, \u00e8 un’opera iconica dell’ingegneria del cemento armato e dell’architettura sportiva del XX secolo. La sua audace pensilina a sbalzo e le suggestive scale elicoidali hanno ricevuto elogi della critica e attenzione popolare in Italia, Europa e nel mondo, e hanno richiamato l’attenzione sul talento di Nervi come ingegnere, designer e costruttore. Per quasi 90 anni, lo stadio \u00e8 stato la sede della prima squadra di calcio di Firenze, la Fiorentina, e sebbene sia stato sottoposto a lavori di ristrutturazione per la Coppa del Mondo del 1990 che hanno nascosto gran parte del suo imponente design strutturale, il tessuto storico dello stadio rimane in gran parte intatto.<\/p>\n

Dopo che i piani per abbandonare l’Artemio Franchi per un nuovo stadio alla periferia di Firenze sono falliti, la Fiorentina ha annunciato, all’inizio di quest’anno, i piani per ricostruire una nuova struttura sul luogo del capolavoro di Nervi. Autirizzati dalla legislazione approvata, frettolosamente, a settembre che esenta gli stadi e altri impianti sportivi dalla completa legislazione italiana sulla conservazione, i piani della squadra minacciano di demolire o alterare irreversibilmente gran parte della struttura dello stadio storico, lasciando potenzialmente solo \u00ab souvenir \u00bb come la Torre Maratona, sostituendone molti. delle tribune in cemento originali.<\/strong> Lo ha confermato il 16 novembre, quando la squadra ha scritto al Ministero per i Beni Culturali chiedendo di valutare quali parti sarebbe stata autorizzata a demolire.<\/p>\n

In risposta, l’Associazione Progetto Pier Luigi Nervi<\/strong> sta organizzando una campagna per sensibilizzare sull’importanza dello stadio e sull’imminente minaccia alla sua integrit\u00e0, lanciando un sito web in italiano e inglese (https:\/\/www.salviamoilfranchi.org\/<\/a>)<\/strong> che dettaglia il progetto e la storia dello stadio e che chiede ad architetti, ingegneri e storici di contattare Andrea Pessina, Soprintendente Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Firenze per\u00a0salvare lo stadio Nervi.<\/strong> Una petizione su change.org<\/a><\/strong> diretta al sindaco di Firenze a sostegno del capolavoro di Nervi ha raccolto oltre 2.600 firme da tutto il mondo<\/strong> (http:\/\/chng.it\/ZRccYwNG<\/a>), e l’associazione PLNP<\/strong> sta conducendo una campagna tra i principali architetti e ingegneri in tutto il mondo per attirare l’attenzione sulla minaccia di demolizione.<\/p>\n

Thomas Leslie, FAIA,<\/strong> storico dell’edilizia e autore di Beauty\u2019s Rigor: Patterns of Production in the Work di Pier Luigi Nervi,<\/em> definisce il Franchi \u00abun’opera essenziale dell’ingegneria e dell’architettura del XX secolo<\/em>\u00ab. \u00abQuesto \u00e8 stato il progetto che per primo ha accennato a un grande talento da scoprire che lavora in Italia<\/em>\u00ab, ha detto. \u00abLo stadio di Nervi ha stabilito uno standard elevato per il design sportivo e per l’ingegneria strutturale, combinando miglioramenti nell’efficienza con forme strutturali audaci ed elementi architettonici poetici ed evocativi.<\/em>\u00bb Per prevenire l’irrimediabile distruzione dello stadio, il Comitato Scientifico Internazionale ICOMOS per il Patrimonio del XX secolo<\/strong> ha emesso una International Heritage Alert<\/strong>. \u00ab\u00c8 estremamente difficile credere a ci\u00f2 che sta accadendo, dato il significato schiacciante e ovvio di questo luogo storico<\/em>\u00ab, commenta Gunny Harboe, FAIA, Presidente del Comitato Scientifico Internazionale<\/strong>, \u00abNervi \u00e8 stato senza dubbio uno dei grandi maestri architetti \/ ingegneri del 20 \u00b0 secolo, con influenza in tutto il mondo<\/em> \u00ab. L’Allerta chiede che venga interrotta l’imminente demolizione dello stadio, che venga condotta un’indagine approfondita e neutrale sulle sue condizioni strutturali e architettoniche<\/strong> e che la conservazione del tessuto storico sia una priorit\u00e0 nei piani futuri della squadra.<\/p>\n
