The world premiere will take place on 28 and 30 November at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa.
We would like to thank the director, who has kindly granted permission to share her full director’s notes with us:

«The Tower of Pisa is one of those symbols from which the human animal, versed in symbolism, draws comfort and inspiration, identifying with it and seeing it as a reflection of self, and this happens precisely because it is … lopsided! Its defect has become its strong point, redrafting its history and its relationship with the city. Over the past 850 years, this tower or, rather, this bell tower has kept watch over the city, “mourning the dead, disrupting winds, honouring festivities, dispersing winds and inciting men”, like a true mother. This diptych is intended to be a fresco about the Tower of Pisa, a medieval painting, like the marvellous 14th century frescoes in the cemetery, where there is neither time nor space, but everything coexists in an extraordinary composition, intermittently surreal and wondrous, in which rationality is forced to give way to amazement. In other words, a bestiary of the Tower over the centuries, from its benefactress Berta di Bernardo, up until today, up to the last foreign tourist who climbed yesterday to the top of the leaning tower. Its unmistakable tilt is a mirror of ourselves: a shortcoming, a state of imbalance that resolves itself into brawls, anger, inability to keep company, which has marked the history of the tower ever since construction began, when it was just a single floor and sank to one side. This is a quintessentially Italian story, often with contemporary characteristics, of blame passing back and forth like a pendulum that cannot come to rest, of the search for scapegoats, of conflict between religious and civil authority, and of scientists whose ideas are rejected.Collapse is a nightmare that we have always been fighting against. That is why it was important to narrate this ‘erratic dance’ of the Tower over eight centuries, with a body (or cluster of bodies), alive, pulsing, able to oscillate, about to fall and then to rise again, the living legend of a community that has, throughout the centuries, offered up blood and sweat in the name of its identity and its symbol. The only possible epilogue is to embrace the city of today and its audience, and together to face the current difficulty of the human condition: as we watch, we are all in danger of collapse and, to stay on our feet, must constantly challenge the laws of balance and adapt to a reality that shifts beneath us.We are like her, the breathing marble tower.»

Photo from rehearsals, courtesy of Fondazione Teatro di Pisa

Giulia Ambrosio | Founder & Head of PressRoom
giulia@pressroom.cloud

Miriam Quaranta
miriam@pressroom.cloud+39 333 9263 309

Press Office for Stefania Panighini
www.stefaniapanighini.it

Stefania Panighini directs a world premiere diptychLe bal masqué / La Torre 28 & 30 November | Teatro Verdi, Pisa […]

[1

post-82581","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sin-categoria
["GET
