The occasion is an exceptional one, marking a brand-new production by Shirin Neshat of Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck, one of the foundational works of modern musical theatre. The Parma staging adopts the original 1762 Vienna version, which most clearly embodies Gluck’s reformist ideals: the purity and expressive clarity of his musical language, and the perfect balance between the noble classical aesthetic pursued by librettist Calzabigi and the composer, and the profound human emotion at the heart of the drama.

“This encounter with Orfeo ed Euridice at the Teatro Regio di Parma represents a double debut for me,” says Francesca Pia. “I’m singing the role of Euridice for the first time, and I’m doing so in a theatre steeped in history, where I have long aspired to perform. Moreover, I have the honour of opening the 2026 season! It marks not only the beginning of the theatre’s new year, but also my own, which starts with this intense experience and will continue with a series of artistic challenges taking me across three continents. Taking part in this new production of Gluck’s masterpiece, shaped by Shirin Neshat’s powerful vision and under the musical direction of Fabio Biondi, makes this beginning all the more significant. In this interpretation, the perspective shifts: the narrative is no longer driven solely by Orfeo’s loss, but by Euridice’s point of view, finally placed at the centre of the stage. From a musical perspective, Euridice is a role that above all requires truth. Together with Fabio Biondi, we are working to move beyond a purely polished approach to singing, in search of expressive courage, allowing genuine emotion to surface, even in moments of vulnerability. Euridice emerges as a woman of today — authentic and contemporary — seeking to be heard and recognised, and rediscovering her strength through her own choices. Bringing her to the stage entails emotional exposure and complete trust in a musical language that is essential and uncompromising, leaving no room to hide and rendering the character profoundly relevant to our time.”

The production features sets by Heike Vollmer, costumes by Katharina Schlipf, lighting design by Valerio Tiberi, choreography by Claudia Greco and dramaturgy by Yvonne Gebauer.
