Among those present at the audition was Amintore Galli, who later recalled:&nbsp;<em>\u201c\u2026 And so, on one of those fervent days following the triumph of Cavalleria rusticana, in a room at the Teatro Costanzi, Giordano, seated at the piano, held Sonzogno spellbound as he performed Marina, which was listened to from the first note to the last\u201d.&nbsp;<\/em>The result was immediate: Giordano secured a commission to compose&nbsp;<em>Mala vita<\/em>, based on a play of the same name by Salvatore Di Giacomo.&nbsp;<em>Marina<\/em>&nbsp;was subsequently set aside, and only insight \u2014 and a degree of good fortune \u2014 allowed&nbsp;<strong>Andreas Gies to rediscover the manuscript&nbsp;<\/strong>at Yale University\u2019s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and to prepare the critical edition.<strong>At last,&nbsp;<em>Marina<\/em>&nbsp;will be heard for the first time ever, in concert, on 12th and 14th February at Milan\u2019s Teatro Dal Verme<\/strong>, as part of the 81st concert season of I Pomeriggi Musicali. Conducted by&nbsp;<strong>Vincenzo Milletar\u00ec<\/strong>, leading the&nbsp;<strong>Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali<\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong>Chorus of the Teatro Petruzzelli<\/strong>&nbsp;(prepared by&nbsp;<strong>Marco Medved<\/strong>), the title role will be sung by&nbsp;<strong>Eleonora Buratto<\/strong>. Alongside her, another internationally renowned opera star,&nbsp;<strong>Freddie De Tommaso<\/strong>, will appear as Giorgio Lascari, with baritones&nbsp;<strong>Mihai Damian<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Nicholas Mogg&nbsp;<\/strong>as Lambro and Daniele.<br><br><strong>Eleonora Buratto<\/strong>, delighted to be at the centre of what she describes as&nbsp;<em>\u201cone of the most eagerly anticipated events in the musical world\u201d<\/em>,&nbsp;<strong>has said<\/strong>:&nbsp;<em>\u201cMarina is a stream of music and, as such, is similar to the other operas by composers like Mascagni, Puccini and Giordano himself, who revolutionised Italian opera at the close of the eighteen hundreds\u201d.<\/em><br><br>The opera will be recorded on this occasion by&nbsp;<strong>Decca Classics<\/strong>.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pressroom.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/628454433_1210387447846231_5344063450705960872_n.jpg\" width=\"620\" alt=\"\"><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Poster courtesy of I Pomeriggi Musicali<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>\ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf9&nbsp;<\/strong>La storia di&nbsp;<em>Marina<\/em>, la prima opera di un poco pi\u00f9 che ventenne Umberto Giordano, \u00e8 costellata di profezie. Come quella riportata sopra nel titolo, pronunciata da Filippo Franchetti, membro della commissione giudicatrice del secondo Concorso Sonzogno che impose al mondo musicale&nbsp;<em>Cavalleria Rusticana<\/em>&nbsp;di Pietro Mascagni. Marina arriv\u00f2 sesta a quella competizione ma colp\u00ec il lungimirante Sonzogno che convoc\u00f2 il giovane foggiano a Roma per ascoltarne di persona la musica. L\u2019audizione ebbe tra i testimoni diretti Amintore Galli, che scrisse&nbsp;<em>\u201c\u2026 Ed ecco che in una delle giornate fiammeggianti dell\u2019entusiasmo di Cavalleria rusticana, in una sala del Teatro Costanzi, il Giordano, seduto al pianoforte, incantava l\u2019attenzione del Sonzogno eseguendo la Marina, che fu da questi ascoltata dalla prima all\u2019ultima nota\u201d<\/em>. E, aggiungiamo, guadagnandosi seduta stante l\u2019ingaggio per musicare&nbsp;<em>Mala vita<\/em>, tratta da un soggetto di Salvatore Di Giacomo.&nbsp;<em>Marina<\/em>&nbsp;venne accantonata e solo il fiuto (e la fortuna) hanno permesso ad&nbsp;<strong>Andreas Gies di ritrovare il manoscritto<\/strong>&nbsp;presso la Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library di Yale e quindi di procedere all\u2019edizione critica. E finalmente siamo arrivati ad ascoltare&nbsp;<strong><em>Marina<\/em>, in prima mondiale assoluta e in forma di concerto, il 12 e il 14 febbraio al Teatro Dal Verme di Milano<\/strong>, nell\u2019ambito della l\u201981\u00aa Stagione concertistica dei Pomeriggi Musicali.<em>Marina<\/em>, diretta da&nbsp;<strong>Vincenzo Milletar\u00ec<\/strong>&nbsp;alla guida dell\u2019<strong>Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali<\/strong>&nbsp;e del&nbsp;<strong>Coro del Teatro Petruzzelli&nbsp;<\/strong>preparato da&nbsp;<strong>Marco Medved<\/strong>, sar\u00e0 cantata da&nbsp;<strong>Eleonora Buratto<\/strong>.
