Her sacrifice is guided by a vision: a child who embodies purity and innocence. This prophetic figure leads Liù to break the spell of death that afflicts Peking like a disease, restoring to the world the possibility of renewal. The timeless, mythological world in which I have set my Turandot is itself afflicted by a spreading corruption, a dark contamination that continues to grow. It is an extension of Turandot herself, a diseased thought that has infected the souls of Peking, reducing its people to a ghostly, dehumanised mass, superstitious and subdued, trapped in a world on the brink of collapse. The dawn, long awaited like an apocalypse, finally arrives, yet we do not know whether Turandot will succeed in wresting Calaf’s name from him, or whether all will be put to death as decreed. What we do witness, however, is the dissolution of the curse, giving way to a world newly in bloom, yet burdened with a harrowing awareness that weighs — more than death itself — upon every conscience.”

The production, selected from 49 submissions as part of the OperaLombardia call for creative teams under the age of 35, is a co-production between the theatres of OperaLombardia, Teatro del Giglio and Teatro Carlo Coccia in Novara.
