Nessuno ha mai considerato la rapidit\u00e0 della giustizia come il suo valore principale. Al contrario, la giustizia \u00e8 apprezzata soprattutto per la sua pazienza e per la sua capacit\u00e0 di agire con cautela. Ogni societ\u00e0 civile ha sempre riconosciuto che la verit\u00e0 non appare necessariamente al primo sguardo. La ricerca della verit\u00e0 \u00e8 un processo che richiede tempo e pu\u00f2 essere chiarito solo attraverso un attento esame dei fatti, ascoltando diverse opinioni e permettendo che le prove abbiano pi\u00f9 peso delle emozioni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tribunali agiscono con prudenza, ed \u00e8 proprio questa la ragione della loro apparente lentezza. Le prove vengono raccolte e messe alla prova, i documenti vengono verificati, le argomentazioni vengono analizzate e ogni sforzo viene compiuto affinch\u00e9 il giudizio sia basato sulla realt\u00e0 e non sulle supposizioni. Ci\u00f2 che molti considerano un ritardo \u00e8 in realt\u00e0 la disciplina necessaria per proteggere l\u2019equit\u00e0 e garantire un giusto processo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nell\u2019era di Internet \u00e8 emersa una nuova aula di tribunale, senza avvocati, testimoni o giudici. Essa si trova sugli schermi dei nostri dispositivi portatili. Non si ferma mai, non aspetta e non conosce tempi di attesa. Ogni secondo porta con s\u00e9 una quantit\u00e0 enorme di opinioni, la costruzione o la distruzione di reputazioni e verdetti pronunciati da persone che hanno ascoltato soltanto frammenti di una storia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questa corte invisibile si chiama social media<\/strong>. \u00c8 un tribunale che non segue il concetto del tempo, ma quello dei secondi. Opera senza il beneficio della legge, senza il sostegno della ragione e senza il processo di verifica che caratterizza la vera giustizia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oggi la notizia viaggia pi\u00f9 velocemente della riflessione. Viene mostrata un\u2019immagine, caricato un breve video, pubblicata una frase o condiviso uno screenshot. Nel giro di pochi minuti iniziano ad apparire migliaia di commenti. Milioni di persone formano opinioni prima ancora di chiedersi:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abQuesta informazione \u00e8 completa?\u00bb \u00ab\u00c8 stata modificata?\u00bb \u00ab\u00c8 stata interpretata male?\u00bb \u00ab\u00c8 realmente corretta?\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il giudizio arriva con una velocit\u00e0 impressionante, mentre la verit\u00e0 sta ancora raccogliendo le proprie prove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questo potrebbe essere uno dei pi\u00f9 grandi paradossi della civilt\u00e0 moderna. Viviamo in un\u2019epoca in cui l\u2019uomo non ha mai avuto cos\u00ec tante informazioni, ma allo stesso tempo non \u00e8 mai stato cos\u00ec impaziente nel comprenderle. La conoscenza \u00e8 aumentata oltre ogni misura, ma la saggezza continua a richiedere lo stesso tempo di maturazione del passato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La tecnologia ha reso la comunicazione pi\u00f9 veloce, ma non ha accelerato la maturit\u00e0 umana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c8 nella natura della mente umana evitare l\u2019incertezza e preferire le risposte immediate. Gli psicologi riconoscono da tempo che una domanda senza risposta crea disagio e inquietudine. Quando mancano informazioni, l\u2019immaginazione tende a riempire gli spazi vuoti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La crescente influenza dei social media su questo comportamento rafforza spesso le reazioni emotive pi\u00f9 che quelle razionali. L\u2019indignazione si diffonde rapidamente. La compassione si diffonde rapidamente. La paura si diffonde rapidamente. Ma la riflessione calma e profonda non possiede la stessa velocit\u00e0 e raramente suscita lo stesso entusiasmo nella folla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spesso questo porta le persone a iniziare le loro conversazioni online con delle conclusioni gi\u00e0 formulate, invece che con delle domande. Molti non iniziano chiedendosi: \u00abChe cosa \u00e8 realmente accaduto?\u00bb<\/strong>; piuttosto, la loro prima domanda diventa: \u00abDa che parte dobbiamo stare? Chi dobbiamo sostenere e chi dobbiamo condannare?\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La ricerca della verit\u00e0 si trasforma cos\u00ec nella ricerca dell\u2019approvazione. Il desiderio di conoscere la realt\u00e0 viene sostituito dal desiderio di ottenere consenso. Tuttavia, la popolarit\u00e0 non \u00e8 una prova. Un\u2019opinione condivisa da molti non diventa automaticamente una verit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La storia continua a ripeterci una lezione importante: le persone possono essere ingannate anche in grandi numeri. Intere societ\u00e0 hanno abbracciato miti e convinzioni che hanno prodotto conseguenze negative. Le maggioranze hanno accusato persone innocenti e hanno elogiato coloro che erano colpevoli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I numeri possono sembrare convincenti, ma non sono necessariamente sinonimo di verit\u00e0. Credere mille volte in qualcosa non la rende vera. Non \u00e8 mai esistito un applauso capace di trasformare un errore in verit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uno degli aspetti pi\u00f9 influenti dei social media \u00e8 proprio questo: la prima versione<\/strong> di ogni storia possiede un enorme vantaggio. Pu\u00f2 essere vera oppure falsa, ma stabilisce il tono emotivo con cui verranno interpretati tutti i fatti successivi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le correzioni raramente ricevono la stessa attenzione delle accuse iniziali, perch\u00e9 una rettifica non porta con s\u00e9 lo stesso entusiasmo o la stessa emozione di una condanna. Le spiegazioni arrivano spesso quando milioni di persone hanno gi\u00e0 deciso ci\u00f2 che vogliono credere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quel punto la prima impressione si \u00e8 radicata nella mente collettiva ed \u00e8 diventata estremamente difficile da eliminare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La reputazione \u00e8 quindi uno degli elementi pi\u00f9 vulnerabili nell\u2019ambiente digitale. Una persona pu\u00f2 essere portata alla fama e poi gettata nell\u2019oblio in poche ore, nonostante anni di duro lavoro e di impegno, a causa di un video modificato, di una conversazione incompleta o di un titolo fuorviante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anche quando successivamente viene dimostrata la sua innocenza, il sospetto pu\u00f2 rimanere nella mente delle persone. La legge pu\u00f2 restituire a un individuo il suo status giuridico, ma l\u2019immaginazione pubblica non sempre \u00e8 altrettanto pronta a perdonare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tutto questo conduce a una profonda domanda filosofica:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La giustizia senza pazienza non \u00e8 veramente giustizia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un semplice verdetto non rappresenta la giustizia. La vera giustizia richiede una disciplina morale: non prendere decisioni senza prima comprendere pienamente la situazione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essa richiede umilt\u00e0 intellettuale, cio\u00e8 la capacit\u00e0 di riconoscere che ci\u00f2 che pensiamo inizialmente potrebbe non rappresentare l\u2019intera storia e potrebbe persino non essere la storia corretta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ogni conclusione affrettata rischia di essere un pregiudizio nascosto dietro una falsa sicurezza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il problema non \u00e8 il social media in s\u00e9. Come ogni grande invenzione, esso riflette il carattere e l\u2019uso che ne fanno le persone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I social media hanno contribuito a scoprire crimini, denunciare la corruzione, ritrovare membri di famiglie scomparse, promuovere iniziative di solidariet\u00e0 e offrire una voce a persone che spesso non venivano ascoltate dalle istituzioni tradizionali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Molte ingiustizie sono state portate alla luce soltanto grazie al coraggio di una persona che ha scelto di parlare attraverso gli strumenti digitali. Questi risultati positivi non devono mai essere minimizzati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuttavia, ogni strumento potente porta con s\u00e9 anche una grande responsabilit\u00e0. Il fuoco pu\u00f2 essere utilizzato per preparare il cibo oppure pu\u00f2 diventare la causa della distruzione di una citt\u00e0. Una penna pu\u00f2 avere il potere di educare, ma anche di diffondere informazioni false. La tecnologia non fa eccezione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essa pu\u00f2 amplificare sia la saggezza sia la superficialit\u00e0, sia la compassione sia la malvagit\u00e0, tutto dipende dai valori e dai pensieri di chi la utilizza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Molte volte, nella societ\u00e0 moderna, quando le persone vedono un cambiamento rapido, lo interpretano automaticamente come progresso. Abbiamo comunicazioni pi\u00f9 veloci, trasporti pi\u00f9 rapidi, decisioni immediate e risultati pi\u00f9 veloci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma esistono valori importanti della vita che non possono essere accelerati dal tempo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019amicizia non pu\u00f2 essere costruita con la fretta. Non nasce in un solo giorno. Il carattere di una persona si forma attraverso anni di esperienze, sacrifici e apprendimento. La saggezza non si ottiene rapidamente, ma attraverso la riflessione e la contemplazione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questi sono valori eterni dell\u2019umanit\u00e0, e la giustizia appartiene alla stessa famiglia di virt\u00f9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il ritmo della verit\u00e0 \u00e8 completamente diverso dal ritmo della tecnologia. Gli strumenti tecnologici incoraggiano una risposta immediata, mentre la verit\u00e0 richiede osservazione, pazienza e comprensione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La tecnologia ci invita a reagire istantaneamente. La saggezza che deriva dai valori spirituali ci insegna invece a evitare azioni affrettate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tra questi due ritmi \u2014 quello della velocit\u00e0 tecnologica e quello della riflessione umana \u2014 si trova una delle pi\u00f9 grandi sfide morali del nostro tempo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La tecnologia ha certamente trasformato la civilt\u00e0 e, come accade con ogni grande trasformazione, ha portato con s\u00e9 anche nuovi problemi etici.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019innovazione viene spesso presentata come la strada verso una vita migliore, perch\u00e9 rende la nostra esistenza pi\u00f9 semplice, pi\u00f9 veloce e pi\u00f9 connessa. Tuttavia, il progresso non riguarda soltanto la comodit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le macchine possono ridurre il tempo necessario per svolgere molte attivit\u00e0, ma non possono abbreviare il tempo necessario per comprendere la verit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019informazione pu\u00f2 viaggiare in tutto il mondo in pochi secondi, ma la verit\u00e0 pu\u00f2 avanzare soltanto passo dopo passo, attraverso attenzione, verifica e prudenza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mio avviso, il rischio pi\u00f9 grande dei social media non \u00e8 soltanto la diffusione della disinformazione. Il pericolo pi\u00f9 profondo \u00e8 che possano portare le persone a voler credere prima ancora di aver compreso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019inganno esiste nel mondo fin dai tempi antichi. Le voci, i pettegolezzi e i pregiudizi fanno parte della storia della societ\u00e0 umana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci\u00f2 che \u00e8 cambiato \u00e8 soltanto la loro velocit\u00e0, la loro portata e la loro durata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una frase innocente che un tempo poteva essere dimenticata negli anni, oggi pu\u00f2 rimanere facilmente accessibile per decenni e continuare a influenzare l\u2019opinione delle persone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il web possiede una memoria straordinaria, ma questa memoria non \u00e8 sempre giusta. Spesso conserva pi\u00f9 a lungo una condanna rispetto a una successiva correzione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questi fatti trasformano la responsabilit\u00e0 morale di ogni individuo in una necessit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solitamente associamo il concetto di giustizia ai giudici e ai tribunali, ma nell\u2019era digitale chiunque utilizzi Internet diventa parte del processo di formazione dell\u2019opinione pubblica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ogni commento, ogni condivisione, ogni ripubblicazione e ogni \u00abmi piace\u00bb contribuiscono a creare una storia pi\u00f9 grande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un singolo clic pu\u00f2 sembrare insignificante, ma milioni di clic insieme possono costruire o distruggere la reputazione di persone, istituzioni e comunit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La libert\u00e0 di espressione \u00e8 uno dei pilastri fondamentali di una societ\u00e0 democratica. Essa protegge il diritto di mettere in discussione l\u2019autorit\u00e0, denunciare la corruzione ed esprimere il proprio dissenso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuttavia, ogni libert\u00e0 porta con s\u00e9 una responsabilit\u00e0 altrettanto importante. Senza libert\u00e0 non pu\u00f2 esistere una vera responsabilit\u00e0, e senza responsabilit\u00e0 la libert\u00e0 perde il suo significato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una libert\u00e0 priva di responsabilit\u00e0 rischia lentamente di trasformarsi in irresponsabilit\u00e0. Quando le parole non sono accompagnate dalla riflessione, diventano soltanto rumore. La conoscenza deve essere la base di ogni opinione; altrimenti l\u2019opinione si trasforma in pregiudizio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I diritti e le libert\u00e0 possono prosperare soltanto quando sono accompagnati dalla disciplina e dal senso del dovere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La controversia attuale della societ\u00e0 moderna non \u00e8 soltanto un problema tecnologico, ma anche una questione profondamente filosofica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dobbiamo imparare a essere pi\u00f9 umani e pi\u00f9 comprensivi in un mondo che spesso attribuisce maggiore valore alla rapidit\u00e0 e al profitto immediato piuttosto che alla riflessione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La domanda fondamentale \u00e8:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c8 meglio essere i primi oppure essere nel giusto?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sembra una domanda semplice, ma le nostre azioni quotidiane spesso dimostrano una risposta diversa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le civilt\u00e0 non vengono giudicate soltanto dai loro edifici, dalla ricchezza accumulata o dalle invenzioni tecnologiche che hanno creato. Esse vengono valutate anche sulla base dei valori morali che difendono.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La storia non ha mai premiato quelle societ\u00e0 potenti che hanno rinunciato alla giustizia e all\u2019equit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sacrificare la correttezza in nome del progresso significa perdere il vero significato del progresso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esiste inoltre un altro pericolo nascosto nella cultura del giudizio immediato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quando le persone vedono continuamente altri individui condannati pubblicamente senza prove complete, iniziano lentamente a perdere fiducia e a sviluppare paura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Molti smettono di esprimere liberamente i propri pensieri per timore che una sola frase possa essere fraintesa e distruggere un\u2019intera reputazione costruita nel corso della vita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le persone diventano pi\u00f9 prudenti, la creativit\u00e0 viene limitata e la societ\u00e0 perde gradualmente la propria indipendenza di pensiero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La giustizia non serve soltanto a proteggere gli innocenti; serve anche a garantire la libert\u00e0 di vivere senza il timore di un\u2019umiliazione pubblica ingiustificata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La psicologia ci insegna che noi esseri umani nasciamo con il bisogno di appartenere a un gruppo. Quando le nostre opinioni sono diverse da quelle degli altri, spesso ci sentiamo insicuri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I social media rafforzano questa tendenza attraverso il valore attribuito al numero di \u00abmi piace\u00bb, condivisioni, commenti e follower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questi numeri possono creare l\u2019illusione che ci\u00f2 che \u00e8 pi\u00f9 popolare sia necessariamente corretto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma la storia dimostra che, in molte occasioni, la maggioranza ha seguito soltanto un\u2019illusione della verit\u00e0, mentre in altri momenti la verit\u00e0 \u00e8 stata difesa dalla voce solitaria di una persona capace di pensare con chiarezza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La saggezza non ha mai misurato la verit\u00e0 attraverso i numeri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Per questo motivo, l\u2019educazione deve andare oltre la semplice alfabetizzazione e la preparazione professionale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deve sviluppare anche l\u2019umilt\u00e0 intellettuale: la capacit\u00e0 di dire \u00abNon so tutto.\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una mente veramente istruita non \u00e8 quella che offre risposte immediate a ogni domanda, ma quella che comprende la differenza tra conoscenza e comprensione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c8 una mente che sa quando parlare e quando \u00e8 pi\u00f9 saggio rimanere in silenzio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un piccolo ritardo prima di rispondere pu\u00f2 sembrare insignificante, ma in realt\u00e0 rappresenta uno dei gesti pi\u00f9 maturi dell\u2019essere umano. In quel breve intervallo, le emozioni possono essere superate dalla ragione, un\u2019opinione gi\u00e0 formata pu\u00f2 lasciare spazio alle prove e il pregiudizio pu\u00f2 trasformarsi nella possibilit\u00e0 di riconoscere un errore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c8 proprio in quel momento di pausa che la giustizia inizia a prendere la sua giusta direzione. Essa non nasce nei discorsi carichi di emozione o negli slogan, ma nella semplice saggezza di aspettare l\u2019intera storia prima di esprimere un giudizio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prima di formare un\u2019opinione, la cosa migliore che possiamo fare \u00e8 non chiederci:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abChe cosa sento?\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ma piuttosto:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abChe cosa so veramente?\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le emozioni sono importanti, ma non devono mai sostituire i fatti. La compassione \u00e8 un valore nobile, ma una compassione priva di comprensione pu\u00f2 portare a conclusioni sbagliate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Per la vera giustizia sono necessarie due qualit\u00e0 fondamentali: un cuore gentile e una mente ben allenata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ogni generazione affronta sfide diverse. Le generazioni passate hanno dovuto affrontare la mancanza di informazioni. Noi, invece, viviamo in un\u2019epoca di abbondanza informativa e proprio questa abbondanza \u00e8 diventata un nuovo peso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La nostra necessit\u00e0 non \u00e8 soltanto conoscere di pi\u00f9, ma comprendere meglio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La mente dell\u2019uomo si riempie di conoscenza, ma \u00e8 la saggezza che la guida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019informazione \u00e8 uno strumento per conoscere; la riflessione \u00e8 uno strumento per trasformarsi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Se i social media vogliono diventare una forza capace di rafforzare la civilt\u00e0, devono essere uno spazio dove le persone non soltanto esprimono se stesse, ma dimostrano anche discernimento e responsabilit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dobbiamo imparare non solo a parlare, ma anche ad ascoltare; non solo a reagire, ma anche a riflettere; non solo a giudicare, ma anche a comprendere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La tecnologia ha donato all\u2019umanit\u00e0 un potere straordinario. Questo potere pu\u00f2 diventare una benedizione oppure una maledizione, a seconda dei valori con cui scegliamo di utilizzarlo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La questione della velocit\u00e0 della giustizia non riguarda mai soltanto il verdetto finale, ma soprattutto il percorso attraverso cui si arriva ad esso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La prima parola pronunciata non \u00e8 necessariamente la pi\u00f9 saggia. La prima supposizione non \u00e8 sempre quella corretta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La folla pu\u00f2 lanciare un\u2019accusa, ma un\u2019eco non possiede prove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perch\u00e9 dunque dobbiamo avere pazienza con la verit\u00e0?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perch\u00e9 nulla pu\u00f2 danneggiare la verit\u00e0 quando viene esaminata con sincerit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019intelligenza delle macchine non sar\u00e0 l\u2019unico elemento che determiner\u00e0 il futuro della civilt\u00e0; sar\u00e0 soprattutto la saggezza degli esseri umani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Affinch\u00e9 la giustizia rimanga ci\u00f2 che deve essere, dobbiamo recuperare un\u2019antica virt\u00f9 che nessuna tecnologia pu\u00f2 creare: il coraggio di aspettare prima di giudicare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il modo migliore per combattere la disinformazione non \u00e8 soltanto attraverso tecnologie pi\u00f9 avanzate, ma attraverso un\u2019umanit\u00e0 pi\u00f9 consapevole e pi\u00f9 saggia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Se riusciremo ad arrivare al punto in cui daremo pi\u00f9 valore alla comprensione che all\u2019eccitazione, e pi\u00f9 importanza alla verit\u00e0 che alla fretta, allora i social media non saranno pi\u00f9 soltanto un luogo di opinioni immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Potranno diventare una piattaforma degna di una civilt\u00e0 veramente illuminata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one has ever been a fan of justice’s speed. It is considered to be of great value, and is most noted for its patience. All civilized society has known that there is not always a first sight of the truth. It’s a process that takes time and can only be made clear through a careful examination of the facts, by listening to various voices, and by letting evidence outnumber emotion. Courts act with caution, hence the reason for their slow action. Evidence is sought and challenged, documents are checked, arguments are discussed and every effort is made to ensure that the judgement is based on reality and not on assumption. What is seen as a delay by many is the discipline that is important to the protection of fairness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an age of the internet, another courtroom has emerged, with no lawyers, witness or judges. It’s present on our hand-held screens. It does not stop, does not stop and has no waiting times. Whether it be the delivery of countless opinions or the elevation and destruction of reputations, or the passing of verdicts by individuals who have heard only snippets of a story, there are so many things happening every second. This court of law that you can’t see is known as social media, and it has no concept of time, but rather seconds.This invisible courtroom is known as social media, which operates without the benefit of law, and without the benefit of reason, operates strictly by the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

News is now faster than being reflected. There is a picture displayed, a short video uploaded or a quote is given or a screen shot is shared. Within minutes thousands of comments start to appear. Millions of people ask themselves questions before deciding on the information’s completeness, editing, misunderstanding, or authenticity like: Is this information complete? Is this information edited? Did they mistake something? Is this information actually correct? Judgment comes so quickly and Truth is still collecting her evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This may be one of the biggest paradoxes of modern civilization. It is an era of the world wherein man has never had so much information and has never been so impatient with comprehending it. The knowledge has increased beyond measure, but wisdom still remains as it was in the old days. Communication has been made faster with the help of technology but there has been no speeding up on human maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the nature of a man’s mind to avoid uncertainty and prefer to have certainty. It is a well known fact that the unanswered question is a source of discomfort to the psychologists. Imagination will fill in the blanks wherever information is lacking. The increased influence of social media on this behavior is that it reinforces emotional responses, not the rational ones. Outrage spreads rapidly. Sympathy spreads rapidly. Fear spreads rapidly. But slow reflections, as with calm reflection, are not quite as fast and do not excite the crowd so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This often leads to people starting off their online dialogue with conclusions, not questions. Many people ask their first question to be, \u00abWhat really happened?\u00bb but instead they ask their first question to be, \u00abWhom do we support, whom do we condemn? A search for truth is a search for agreement.The quest for truth is a quest for consensus. While popularity is not evidence, it becomes so when it’s popular opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The events of history keep repeating themselves: People can be misled in large numbers. Myths and beliefs that have had negative consequences have been embraced by whole societies. Majorities have blamed the innocent, and praised the guilty. Numbers can be made to sound convincing, but there is no truth. Believing it a thousand times doesn’t make it so. There has never been any applause that could be the basis of truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following is one of the most impactful aspects of social media: the \u201cfirst\u201d version of every story has one benefit. It can be true or false but sets the tone of emotion with which all subsequent facts will be seen. Corrections are seldom given the same amount of attention, since there’s no excitement of accusation there. Clarifications come after the millions have made up their minds what they would like to believe. The original impression has established itself at this time to be very hard to remove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reputation is thus one of the most vulnerable assets in the digital environment. One can be propelled to stardom and then sent into exile for their lifetimes of hard work in any number of hours by an edited video, a missing conversation or a bad headline. The feeling of guilt may linger even though their guilt is later disproved. Although a law can return a person to the legal status accorded them, public imagination will not always be as forgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It brings about a significant philosophical question, however. Justice is to be without patience is to be nothing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a verdict is not justice. It means the ethical training of not making a decision without comprehending. It requires intellectual humility \u2013 to say that what the first time we think is probably not the full story or even the right story. Every hasty conclusion is bound to be some kind of prejudice in confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s not the social media that’s the problem. As with all great inventions, it is a reflection of the character or use of those who use it. It uncovered crimes, exposed corruption, brought back missing family members, inspired goodwill initiatives and provided an avenue for the voice of the people that was frequently not heard by the traditional institutions. The issues that have been brought to the forefront are in fact only because one stood up for them.Several injustices have been exposed to the public only due to the braveness of one person who chose to speak through digital means. It is important that these triumphs, not be trivialized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But all strong instruments are responsible for the same. Fire can be the means by which food is prepared or the cause of the destruction of a city. A pen has the power to teach and to spread wrong information. Technology is no exception to the rule. It enhances both wisdom and foolishness, compassion and evil; according to the thoughts of the man who guides it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of times in modern society, the only thing people think of when they see a fast change is progress. We have quicker communication, quicker transportation, quicker decisions, quicker results. But there are some things we hold dear that will not be deterred by time! Friendship can’t be rushed. It is not something that can be made in a day. Character is built over a number of years over time. Wisdom is not hurried, but is gained by contemplation. This is a family of eternal virtues and justice is one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rhythm of truth is altogether a different rhythm than that of technology. Technological means promotes instant response. There’s a lot to be understood if you will observe the truth. Technology is calling on us to react in an instantaneous way. The wisdom that we receive from God teaches us to refrain from hasty action. There is one of the most challenging moral issues of our times between the two rhythms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology has certainly changed civilization, as has always been the case with such changes, there is also a new set of moral issues that come from it. Innovation is frequently touted as the key to a better life, for innovations make life easier, faster and more connected. But it’s not just about convenience, though. The machine can make things shorter, but it can’t make things shorter. The information can be spread throughout the world in just a few seconds, but the truth can only be advanced step by step with caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think the biggest risk of social media is the fact that they can lead to misinformation, but the biggest risk is the fact that they can lead to people wanting to believe before they have understood. Deception has been in the world since time immemorial. Rumours, gossip and prejudice dates back to human society itself. The only thing that has changed is that they’re moving at a different pace, they have more range, and they are more permanent. An innocent line was lost over the years. Today it could be searchable for years, and have a long-lasting effect on the opinions of people who believe it was right. The web is an incredible memory however it isn’t generally fair. It is not uncommon for it to keep the condemnation better than the rectification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These facts make it our moral duty as each of us. The concept of justice usually gets associated with judges and courts but in this digital era, anyone using the internet is becoming a part of the formation of public opinion. All the comments, all the shares, all the re-posts and all the \u201clikes\u201d combine to tell a bigger story. One click can be small but millions of clicks collectively create the reputation of individuals, institutions and\/or communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom of expression is one of the hallmarks of democratic society. It guards against questioning authority, exposing corruption and disagreeing with authority. But with each freedom comes a responsibility equally important. Without freedom there’s no responsibility, and without responsibility there’s no freedom.Freedom without responsibility is slowly becoming recklessness. But when speech is not reflected it is noise. Knowledge is the basis for opinion, otherwise it’s a prejudice. Freedom of rights can only thrive when there is discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current contentious issue for modern society is not only a technological problem, but a philosophical problem as well. We need to be taught how to be kind on a world that is even more concerned with quick profit than thought. First is better than right?Is it better to be first, or right? It should be so simple to do rather isn’t it, but our everyday actions tell different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civilizations do not only exist by their buildings, by the wealth built up or by the technology invented. They also are evaluated in terms of values that they uphold. History does not reward the powerful societies, those that are powerful, that have not been just. Fairness in the name of progress = loss of progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there’s another hidden danger in the instant judgment culture. If you see others continually being publicly condemned for some reason without the full evidence, then you start to lose your trust and develop fear. People don’t speak their mind for fear of only one sentence being misinterpreted and ruining their entire reputation. People get on their guard, creativity is curtailed and society slowly loses its independence of thought. Justice isn’t only for the innocent and it’s for the freedom to live without any fear of public humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We humans are born to seek belonging, and this is taught by psychology. We don’t feel safe when our views are different from others. This is reinforced with social media where the user sees the number of likes, shares, comments and followers. This kind of numbers can give the impression of correctness based on popularity. But history has shown that sometimes the most that the majority has had is the illusion of the truth, and at other times it has been the voice of the one person who was thinking clearly that was the source of the truth. There’s never been a time in the history of wisdom when it relied on maths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence, education has to go beyond the literacy and the skills of work. It must also develop what it means to be intellectually humble, which is the capacity to say, \u00abI don’t know everything.It must also be open to being intellectually humble, the capacity to say, \u00abI don’t know everything. It is not an educated mind which gives immediate answers to all questions. It’s one that understands the distinction between knowledge and comprehension. It understands when to speak and when it’s better to keep your mouth shut!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most minute delay before responding can seem inconsequential but it is one of the most mature of gestures. In that fleeting interval the emotions are overcome by the reason, a preconceived idea is replaced by evidence, and prejudice is replaced by the possibility of being corrected. Justice starts to be set right during that interval. It is not used in speeches of an emotional nature or a slogan, but in the casual gentleness of waiting for the whole story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think the best thing we can do before forming an opinion is to not ask ourselves \u00abWhat do I feel?\u00bb but \u201cWhat do I know?\u201d Emotions are important, but don’t overlook the facts. Compassion is worthy of admiration, but it’s not just any sort of admiration.Compassion is good, but not that kind of compassion. There are two things that are required for justice: a kind heart and a well-trained mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each generation is faced with a different set of issues. It wasn’t easy for past generations to deal with the lack of information. We live in a time of plenty and are burdened by it! Don’t know more, but understand better. A man’s mind is filled with knowledge and wisdom guides. Information is a means of informing, reflection is a means of transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it is to be a force that is strengthening civilization or not, social media should be a place where people not only express themselves, but also show their discernment. It is to be inspiring to speak, but to listen; to react, but to reflect; to judge, but to understand. Humanity has been granted a tremendous power by technology! It can be a blessing or a curse depending upon the values that are brought to the exercise of that power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question of the speed of justice is never a consideration of its final verdict, rather it is a consideration of its journey. The best word of the mouth isn’t necessarily the wisest one. It’s not always the case that the first guess is the right one. The crowd could be making an accusation, but the echo has no evidence. Why must we be patient towards truth, since nothing can happen to it when it is examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intelligence of machines won’t be the sole factor of determining the future of civilization, it will be the wisdom of the people. For justice to remain largely what it is, we need to reclaim an old virtue that is not technologically acquired, and that is, courage to wait to make judgments. Advances in technology are not the best way to defeat misinformation, but a smarter humanity. If only we can get to the point where we appreciate understanding over excitement, and truth over haste, social media will no longer be a place of instant opinion and it may just become a platform worthy of an enlightened civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
