Il comico e attore australiano sarà nei prossimi giorni a Reggio Calabria, terra di origine dei suoi genitori. Farà tappa nei Comuni di Melicuccà e Rizziconi
Roma, 17 marzo 2025 – “Siamo entusiasti di annunciare che il comico e attore italo-australiano Joe Avati intraprenderà un emozionante viaggio in Italia alla ricerca delle proprie radici. Non si tratta della sua prima visita nel Belpaese ma questa volta farà un’esperienza del tutto unica e indimenticabile che lo porterà – grazie a ITALEA – a immergersi nelle tradizioni, nella cultura e nei sapori autentici delle sue origini”. Giovanni Maria De Vita, Consigliere d’Ambasciata e responsabile del Progetto Turismo delle Radici presso il Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale presenta così il viaggio delle radici di Joe Avati che sarà in Calabria dal 18 al 23 marzo.
Avati è nato in Australia ma i suoi genitori sono originari di Reggio Calabria, precisamente dei piccoli comuni di Melicuccà e Rizziconi. È un comico popolare soprattutto tra gli italiani e discendenti di italiani in Australia, ma anche in Canada, Regno Unito e Stati Uniti. Nei suoi spettacoli mette insieme dialetto calabrese e inglese. Avati è ora pronto a scoprire la terra natale dei suoi genitori e dei suoi nonni insieme alle tradizioni e ai costumi, ai suoi sapori, alla sua gente e alle sue bellezze. E lo farà grazie a Italea, il programma di promozione del turismo delle radici, lanciato dal Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale all’interno del progetto PNRR e finanziato da NextGenerationEU.
Il progetto mira ad attrarre italiani all’estero e italo-discendenti intenzionati a scoprire i luoghi e le tradizioni delle proprie origini, fornendo un insieme di servizi per agevolare il viaggio in Italia. È dedicato sia a chi conosce già le proprie origini italiane – come Joe Avati – e vuole organizzare un viaggio per ritrovare i luoghi, i costumi e la cultura dei propri antenati, sia a chi le deve ancora identificare.
L’attore incontrerà la sua famiglia d’origine insieme alla comunità locale e parteciperà a eventi e attività come laboratori di cucina tradizionale, artigianato e momenti di convivialità che gli permetteranno di fortificare il legame con la sua terra d’origine. Avrà, inoltre, l’opportunità di immergersi nelle usanze locali e visitare le bellezze del territorio.
“Per chi cerca le proprie radici, queste esperienze rappresentano un’opportunità unica per connettersi con la storia e la cultura di un luogo di cui si è sempre sentito parlare” spiega De Vita.
Le tappe del viaggio di Avati, organizzate da Italea Calabria, includeranno alcuni dei Comuni più affascinanti della regione come Reggio Calabria, Pizzo Calabro, Palmi, Scilla, Spilinga, Ciminà e Canolo. Dopo l’incontro con il presidente della Regione Calabria Roberto Occhiuto, in programma il 18 marzo, sarà nei paesi d’origine Melicuccà e Rizziconi (provincia di Reggio Calabria): lì Avati avrà la possibilità di abbracciare parenti, consultare documenti – come certificati di nascita o matrimonio – visitare il cimitero dove sono sepolti i suoi antenati oltre a incontrare genealogisti, artigiani, chef, che lo guideranno in un percorso di apprendimento e scoperta.
“Questo viaggio rappresenta per me un ritorno alle origini, ma anche una scoperta di aspetti che non ho mai avuto modo di vivere appieno. Non è la città famosa in Italia che mi interessa, ma la terra dove i miei antenati hanno vissuto. Voglio connettermi con la storia e la cultura della mia famiglia in modo profondo e autentico, e non c’è modo migliore di farlo se non attraverso piccole scoperte quotidiane che raccontano il legame che mi unisce alla Calabria” ha dichiarato Joe Avati.

The Australian comedian and actor will soon be in Reggio Calabria, the homeland of his parents. He will visit the towns of Melicuccà and Rizziconi.

While this is not his first visit to Italy, this time he will have a completely unique and unforgettable experience, thanks to ITALEA, immersing himself in the traditions, culture, and authentic flavors of his origins.» This is how Giovanni Maria De Vita, Embassy Counselor and head of the Roots Tourism Project at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, introduces Joe Avati’s roots journey, which will take place in Calabria from March 18 to 23.
Avati was born in Australia, but his parents are originally from Reggio Calabria, specifically from the small towns of Melicuccà and Rizziconi. He is a popular comedian, especially among Italians and descendants of Italians in Australia, as well as in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In his shows, he blends the Calabrian dialect with English. Avati is now ready to discover the homeland of his parents and grandparents, along with its traditions, customs, flavors, people, and beauty. He will do so thanks to Italea, the roots tourism promotion program launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation as part of the PNRR project and funded by NextGenerationEU. The project aims to attract Italians abroad and Italian descendants who want to explore the places and traditions of their origins, providing a range of services to facilitate travel to Italy. It is designed both for those who already know their Italian roots – like Joe Avati – and want to organize a trip to rediscover the places, customs, and culture of their ancestors, and for those who have yet to identify them.
The actor will meet his extended family and the local community, participating in events and activities such as traditional cooking workshops, craft demonstrations, and moments of conviviality that will strengthen his bond with his ancestral land. He will also have the opportunity to immerse himself in local customs and explore the region’s beauty. «For those searching for their roots, these experiences represent a unique opportunity to connect with the history and culture of a place they have always heard about,» explains De Vita.
The stops on Avati’s journey, organized by Italea Calabria, will include some of the region’s most fascinating towns, such as Reggio Calabria, Pizzo Calabro, Palmi, Scilla, Spilinga, Ciminà, and Canolo. After meeting with the President of the Region, Roberto Occhiuto, on March 18, he will visit his ancestral towns of Melicuccà and Rizziconi (in the province of Reggio Calabria). There, Avati will have the chance to embrace relatives, consult documents – such as birth or marriage certificates – visit the cemetery where his ancestors are buried, and meet genealogists, artisans, and chefs who will guide him on a journey of learning and discovery.

It’s not the famous cities in Italy that interest me, but the land where my ancestors lived. I want to connect deeply and authentically with the history and culture of my family, and there’s no better way to do that than through small daily discoveries that tell the story of my bond with Calabria,» says Joe Avati.

Avati ha iniziato la sua carriera nei cabaret e ha guadagnato popolarità grazie ai suoi spettacoli dal vivo, che hanno riscosso un grande successo specialmente tra gli italiani e discendenti di italiani all’estero. Il suo umorismo si basa principalmente sulle esperienze della comunità italiana in Australia. Cultura, famiglia e tradizioni italiane vengono raccontate con un tocco di ironia e satira. Joe Avati’s ancestors lived in the small towns of Melicuccà and Rizziconi, in the province of Reggio Calabria. Avati began his career in stand up comedy and gained popularity through his live shows, which have been particularly successful among Italians and people of Italian descent living abroad. His humor is primarily based on the experiences of the Italian community in Australia. Italian culture, family, and traditions are portrayed with a touch of irony and satire. Recently, he was awarded «Calabrese of the Year» at the Park Hyatt in Melbourne, during the annual gala organized by the Calabrian Cultural Association of Australia (ACCA).
