DEATH IS INEVITABLE; MEANINGFUL LIVING IS A CHOICE

A Philosophical Reflection on Life, Death, and the Choices We Make.

Human beings spend much of their life trying to achieve something. We desire making a profit, to be respected, to make our families happy and achieve our dreams. These wants propel us forward, sometimes without realizing this one fundamental fact: this trek is a finite one. No man can outlive death. But the question that is most important is not simply the question of when we will die, but how we want to live until we do.

Life goes and comes, but death is not. Life is meaningful, life is not meaningless.Death is inevitable, life is meaningful. This thought is not intended to terrorize, but to make aware of the worthiness of life. When we are merely frightened and hopeless at the prospect of death we may not have grasped the deeper message. Knowing that we will all die can help us to realize how valuable our time is. It should not be completely used up in complaining, jealousy, anger or in the constant competition to outdo others.

The Greatest Mistake We Make

People tend to live as if there is no time in the world. We wait to express love to those we care for, to wait to say sorry when we are in the wrong, and link happiness with some future success. We convince ourselves that we will be happy when we have more money, more recognition, when all our wishes come true.

But, life does not always go our way. People change, relationships grow apart and sometimes time just doesn’t allow for us to get what we want when we want it.

Do we live our lives or do we miss the current life because we are in preparation for a better life?

It’s a question that we should ask ourselves to our own benefit. Planning for the future is important but a future which is planned by neglecting today might also leave us without fulfillment.

A growing awareness of death and an understanding of life.

Don’t avoid thinking about death, it’s not avoidance of life. Instead, we can learn to see things more clearly in life. By starting to see that there is a limited amount of time that we have, we can change our priorities. A dispute that is not about something that matters could become irrelevant. We can start to see our own weaknesses, rather than continually pointing to others.

We can also discover that it’s not necessary to be right in every fight or to correct every criticism or to be superior to everyone we encounter. These are not the ways in which people should live!

One of the understandings that can be expressed in thought is:

“Death does not teach us how to live, but rather, death teaches us how to appreciate how valuable life is.”

…Dr Sethi K.C.

The important thing is to remember death; it is not to only remember it, but to let it shape our actions. If we don’t hear the message of death and make ourselves more considerate, humble, and responsible, what is the point of us even having heard it?

Is it meaningful to live? What is meant by a meaningful life?

A meaningful life does not mean that everyone must become famous, become a member of a high position or build a monument to their name. Not everything that can be achieved can be measured by the value of a life. At times, showing an interested ear towards the troubled person, helping the needy or enjoying time with family can make life meaningful.

For a teacher, it could be important to assist a student in finding confidence. A physician might come across it in his or her attempt to alleviate another person’s pain and agony by knowledge and skill. One of the things a parent can teach a child is how to succeed without losing his or her sense of honesty and compassion. Everyone can contribute to the value of life by fostering a culture of trust, kindness and cooperation.

The meaning of life is not just what we receive from life. It is also contingent on our actions as good people to others.

A thought inspired by the spirit of Sethian Philosophy is:

“The meaning of life is not just what we collect for ourselves, it’s what goodness comes in because we were here.”

…Dr Sethi K.C.

A different outlook asks us to think more of ourselves as individuals and how we can contribute to humankind.

The Answer is: Yes.The answer is: Yes.

An intriguing point comes to mind. What about poverty, sickness, accidents, injustice and unexpected misfortune if we choose meaningful living? Is everyone free to select the circumstance of his/her life?

Certainly not. There are numerous situations that we cannot control. We can’t always choose what things will be hard on us, how long we will live, or what hardships will occur in our lives. So it would be a mistake to say that all of our afflictions are due to a bad decision.

However, in a challenging situation there may be some options that we have. It’s important that we try to be considerate even though we are in pain. Failure is acceptable and another attempt is made, we may admit to errors, or when necessary, we speak against injustice.

We don’t have to be cheerful all the time in order to have a meaningful life. Grief, fatigue, sadness and times of despair are other aspects of humanness. The most important thing is to not become entirely without humanity, even when we are put to the test.

We can’t control all the circumstances of life, but in those cases where we can, we can attempt to choose our response, and how we behave in those circumstances.

…Dr Sethi K.C.

It’s not always a straightforward decision, but it does show us an element of our internal freedom.

In this series, he examines relationships, forgiveness, as well as the importance and value of time.

As we realize that life has its boundaries, we can gain an insight into the significance of relationships. It may start to dawn on us how much we’ve been costing ourselves when we miss out on the person we love for years due to pride. If we make a mistake we would be treating it as an unforgivable offence and if we disagree with someone, it can weigh on our minds too.

Forgiveness does not mean that we are accepting of being mistreated or injustice. It can just be a matter of releasing ourselves from the unneeded bitterness. In some cases, it is okay to repair the relationship while in others, it is essential to take some time apart. Wisdom is also essential to making a difference between the two in a way that impacts one’s life.

Love should be expressed not for a particular reason.

It is small acts that can be significant such as listening to someone we care about, giving them our respect and showing them our feelings at the appropriate time.

We are sometimes reminded of the big things of our lives, and forget the little things when life’s heat is found.

The Courage to question ourselves

There is a lot of time spent by humans on judging the lives of others. We talk to them about their achievements, challenges, actions and lack of them. However, it’s not easy to ask sincere questions about us.

Am I living my life based on what I consider to be important? Is my desire what I should be after, or what society expects me to? Has my character(s) grown as my success has grown? Am I providing what my loved ones need, emotionally, time and attention?

These questions can cause us to feel uncomfortable; this is not the point of self-examination  but rather to be more aware of ourselves. It is to gain insight into self and the opportunities for change.

Philosophically, the opinion of Dr Sethi K.C. is:

It is not that we have time left in our lives, it’s what values we want to give our time.

This is a personal consideration; each person has to make this choice for themselves. The meaning of our lives can only be revealed by none other than God.

Even the day we die, Do Not Postpone Living.

The only thing that is certain about death is that it is the end of life, however, knowing about death can be a sign of a new beginning. It brought to mind the fact that time cannot be kept on hold forever; relationships cannot be kept on hold forever; peace of mind cannot be postponed forever until some distant future.

We don’t have to put aside our duties, our hopes or dreams, or our plans for the future. We must only realize that the essence, meaning, and purpose of life is not limited to some day in the far future. It is evident in our behavior, choices, relationships and duties in our modern lives as well.

It may take us all a different amount of time on our respective journeys but no one has a time guarantee. But instead of continually comparing ourselves to others, we can take note of our own improvements, let go of needless pride and try to do something good as well as just pile up more for ourselves.

We are not always able to know the length of our lives, but we can try and find our values and live our lives by them.

Life can never be without death and living with meaning is a choice.

This awareness beckons us to transcend fear, regret, and simply existing, to become responsible in our actions and decisions, and to live in conscious awareness.

Perhaps the most significant thing we have done in our lifetime is learn, love, do our duty and contribute goodness to the world.

We may not have control over our life span, but we can start today to invest the time and effort into making our lives meaningful.
